IBM battery, bq80201 + bq29312

Postby staceygeek » Sun Feb 22, 2015 6:06 pm

Good day everybody!

I am trying to reset a battery from IBM Thinkpad laptop. Battery FRU P/N: 08K8193. The battery can be read by BE2Works, below is the data of the battery after repacking:

DesignCapacity: 4752 10mWh
FullChargeCapacity: 0 10mWh
CycleCount: 199
Date: 2004.12.23 yyyy.mm.dd
DesignVoltage: 10800 mV
ManufName: SANYO.02
DeviceName: IBM-08K8193
SerialNumber: 0000
ChargingCurrent: 200 mA
ChargingVoltage: 12600 mV
DeviceChemistry: LION
Temperature: 25.9 C
Voltage: 9842 mV
Current: 0 mA
RelativeSOC: 65535%
AbsoluteSOC: 0%
RemainingCapacity: 0 10mWh
VCELL4: 0000 mV
VCELL3: 3348 mV
VCELL2: 3257 mV
VCELL1: 3237 mV
SpecificationInfo: 0031 Hex
Battery Status:
RCA|RTA|INIT|DSG|FD|

One section of cells was completely dead (U<1V), so the battery has locked itself. The fuse is not melted, but the battery doesn´t accept charge current when applied on P+ and P- on the battery pins (not cells directly). After properly repacked the cells I tried to reset the battery. BE2works can read the battery, but it cannot read the chip nor do a reset. When I try to read the chip (with bq80201 chip, selected from the drop-down list), the software reports:

SANYO firmware detected
Enter FCC and press reset.

After I do that, the software reports:

Reset failure.

When tried again, the software recommended to read the chip as it were bq208X. I tried, the software reported:

Chip is sealed
Trying default password
Failed
Chip is sealed
Discharge battery and reset password to default

When I tried to read again and again, the program says:

Chip is unsealed

but shortly after a window pops up, that says:

Access violation at address 00402F75 in module ´BE2Works.exe. "Read of address 00000008.

When I close the pop-up windows, the main windows exits.

In addition I want to mention that the voltage between P+ and P- is hoppping up and down from 0 to 12V all the time. It also was like this also before I tried to do anything with this battery. Can it be that one of the MOSFET is partially damaged?

My questions are:

1) what do you mean by discharged battery? I tried to discharge the cells below 3V per each cell, it didn´t help, tried to disconnect the P+ contact, no luck either.
2) how to reset this battery

You battery has BQ80201 firmware.
Don't try to reset it as BQ2084
Update to 4.25 and try again.

Well, since the battery is still with me after a year, I decided to challenge it again. I have 4.39 version software, so I experienced the same behaviour of the battery and got the same errors. Chip can be easily unsealed but when I try to read the battery it shows the same error:

Access violation at address 00402F75 in module ´BE2Works.exe. "Read of address 00000008.

this time the main window remains open after the error pop-up window is closed, but the cursor ring keeps turning around forever. Since version 4.39 has "soundlights" feature I can clearly see that no SMBus traffic is passed in either direction after the error message appears. I also checked the VCC on bq80201, it remains stable 3.32V all the time.

My question is "might the chip bq80201 be damaged or it's just an unsupported firmware?" Can anybody give me a reasonable advice, please?

bq80201 is re-programmable chip an it can be filled with any code.

It makes sense, but I can't even read it. This is what I get when trying to read the chip as bq80201:

and when I try to reset it, the program says "reset failure". Any more comments, please?

You can read chip correctly because led D is green.
But can't write it.
Probably chip is bad.

Thanks for your comment, admin. I also tried to manually read and write few words, all of my write attempts failed. Just one last question - if the chip is read correctly why is there only one line in the right side window? I can hardly believe the firmware size can be that small or maybe it could?

Because only this data must be corrected.
Not whole dump.
